PRIVATE Information Regarding L-6

OK....you are actually going to L-6, and will be using the various amenities -- like the TV, Air-Conditioning, etc.

So, here the User's Manual for getting there....and being there !!

GETTING TO L-6 FROM EAST END ROAD

First....You need to get L-6 from the East End Road (after you enter Coakley Bay). You turn RIGHT from the East End Road into Coakley Bay when coming from town. You immediately have to either turn left or right. Turn LEFT.

In about 200 yards, you will see the Administrative Building on the left. (The salon and mailboxes are also there.) There is no guard or barrier. You are supposed to drop by the Admin Building in the first day or two you are there and just let them know you will be around...although we will inform them of the details so you do not really have to do this.

As soon as you pass the Admin Building, you will then have to go around a right curve. That will put you driving through the parking area for the Restaurant -- which are the spaces on either side of the hill road you are going up.

At the top you will have to turn along a sharp RIGHT curve and will then encounter a speed bump. Slow down, it is a serious speed bump.

drive in

Once you have gone over the speed bump, you will be approaching a wider area that will cause you to curve LEFT. It will look like this -- although there will be no pink line. The big building to your immediate right is the "G" Building/ The three in front of you are L, M, and N. Since "N" is the last building and the road stops there, you cannot get lost.

L-Building is the first of the three...and L-6 is at the far end of the L-Building.

Park anywhere. L-6 is on the top floor and has its own stairway.

stairs to L-6

Pause at the top of the stairs before you go in...it is the best view from an entry porch in history...

ONCE YOU ARE THERE

As you walk through the door, the light switches for the livingroom and the porch are to your immediate LEFT. The light for the livingroom is on a dimmer that rotates, do you might need to turn it up after you press it. (That switch is also controlled by another one located as you enter the livingroom from the Hall that goes to the bedrroms.)

First Rule: You are in the tropics...if you leave out food, dirty dishes or trash, the various fauna will come and have a party while you are sleeping--and some may stay over !!! PLEASE put all food in the fridge or containers, and put all garbage into the plastic bag in the trash container (There are extra bags under the sink.) The plastic bags can be thrown in the garbage cans in the small pink enclosure just across the road from L-Building...and make sure you re-cover the container after you use it!!

1. AIR CONDITIONING. There are two separate remotes for the A/C units in the Livingroom and Master Bedroom. The big circular button in the middle is the on/off button. Aim it at the AC unit, and press it to turn the unit ON.

a. There is a little panel on the fron that slide down. The MODE button should be pressed until it shows the symbol for COOL....which looks like a daisy (see below). It goes AUTO (a triangle) to COOL (a daisy) to DRY (a water drop) to FAN (a fan in a circle).

b. You can then use the two TEMP buttons (up and down) to set a temperature in degrees Celsius.

c. The FAN button will set the air speed.

d. Either unit can cool the entire place, and both going together can turn it into an ice box. (There is also a "Sleep" setting if you want to allow it to run for an hour or two and turn it off -- as well as a "Timer" setting, which allows you to have it come on just before you get back.)

2. CABLE AND TV. Turn on TV, and make sure the TV set is tuned to Channel 3. The use the remote for the Cable TV box to tune the channels.

3. COMPUTER and INTERNET. The IBM Thinkpad computer is in the Master Bedroom/ It is attached by a cable to the highspeed DSL Modem...The password (if asked) is 2222.

4. TOILETS. The toilet and drain system is very sensitive -- please do not put any chemical (especially bleach) in any drain, or put anything down the toilets. It can kill the water processing system and cause the manager to get quite tense.

5. WATER. We drink bottled water...some people don't...but.... Also, the Main Water cutoff is under the sink in the kitchen.

6. HOT WATER. The Hot Water heater has a timer on it....We try to leave it in the "Always On" position.  It is in the lower part of the small closet on the left when entering the kitchen....if ever there is insufficient HW, just reach in and hit the small black bar on that box.  Shouldn't be a problem though.

7. POWER. Circuit Breakers are in the same closet as the Hot Water Heater--the small closet on the left when entering the kitchen. The breakers for the Hot Water, Fridge, Dishwasher, etc. may be left off -- although this is unlikely. If this happens, just make sure all of those switches are turned on.

8. WASHER/DRYER. The USVI water is VERY soft. Use lots less soap than you usually would. Please do not overload the washer or dryer. Also, it is humid, so the dryer make take a bit longer than normal.

9. SECURITY. When you leave, lock the doors. The sliders onto the porch can be locked both with a small sliding clip in the handle and with a bar placed to the left of the door. The main entry door has two locks. We have never had any trouble at all, but wherever there are tourists, there is the possibility of someone trying to get into your bags. Same with the car. Don't leave valuables (or anything for that matter) where someone can see them, and always lock the car.

10. GROCERY STORES. . . .There is a small market just outside of Coakley Bay.  You go to the entrance, turn right onto the East End Road, and it is ahead on the left less than a 1/2 mile.  There are also several large supermarkets. . . .The really nice 'specialty' market is "Schooner Bay Market" which is just before you get into Christiansted.  As you are headed into town you will see a auto gas/service station on the left that is BRIGHTLY painted Yellow.  The Market is directly across the street from it.  To get there (and pretty much everywhere else you will need to:

Go  to the entrance of Coakley Bay.  Turn Left onto the East End Road (Route 82) -- headed West toward town. At Cheeseburger in Paradise, turn left, and in a quarter mile, instead of going straight, turn right -- that too is Route 82.

You will pass the entrance to the Green Cay marina (where the Galleon Restaurant is located) on your right.  You will pass the entrance to the Buccaneer Hotel and Golf Course (and its Terrace Restaurant) on your right, a gas station at an intersection on your right, a small school on your left, and then you will come over a small rise and see a bright yellow gas station on the left with a little plaza on the right.  The "Schooner Bay Market" is in that little plaza on the right.  Like a small, island version of Citerellas.  Best meats, bakery, etc.  (In the Gallows Bay area behind that market, you will find the Post Office, hardware store, garden store, appliance store, computer store, etc.)

If you kept going straight, in about a mile, you will be in Christiansted.  (Before you get there, you will pass both Tutto Bene (on the right) and (Savant) on the right.

POOL AND BEACHES

POOL. When our friends Bob and Mark were down there last month, they walked down the drive to get to the pool...although you can do this...there is a stairway that takes you down there. Walk back past the G Building. You will see a short stairway that takes you to a longer on. Keep walking down. When you get down to the sidewalk, turn LEFT...it is about 30 yards ahead. When we feel lazy, we drive down and park in the Rest parking and walk the last 200 ft. I know...pathetic, but Carl is ageing.

BEACHES. The beach directly below the condo is called Coakley Bay Beach, and it is great for snorkeling, but it has rock and sea urchins, so you have to wear something with very hard soles like diving/surfing booties.  It is actually the Eastern Part of Coakley Bay Beach.  You get to it by walking out of the entrance going to the RIGHT (away from town) and crossing the road just 50 feet down. The beach is just on the other side of the trees. You will see a small pathway.

The really good beach is still technically part of Coakley Bay, it is the Western Part of the Bay -- but you cannot walk to it directly because there is a rock prominatory that runs between the two. See the map below.  What looks like a small pond just to the left of it is a (large) salt water tidal pool.  It does not get on many lists of usual places. It is a dream.

beach

It is 1 minute by car, or 10 minutes to walk. It is the beach you see when you look out from the condo's porch. From the entrances to Carden Beach Condos and Coakley Bay Condos (they're at the same place on opposite sides of the East End Road)  start West back towards Christiansted.  Go past the gated entrance to the Coakley Bay Plantation--behind the huge iron fence.  In about 500 feet you'll get past the fence, and then see the next right.  It is a dirt road--take it. Drive in to the end of the road...it ends just before the beach. The beach is long, curving, protected, and toward the point there are white sand entry points.  A lot of parasailers know about this one and use it.   It is just like the picture books.

beach map

The truth of the matter is that almost everyone uses the pool....and when you want go to a beach there are so many spectacular and dramatic and out of the way places, that you hop in the car and drive to almost any one of them. Be sure to go to this site to see a complete list of all the beaches.
